Have you ever wondered what goes into creating a Kite collection?

Read on to discover how our latest range 'journeyed' from an idea, to prints and designs, right through to a range of beautiful clothes.

Our inspiration

Jo, our founder who also heads up the design team, starts any new season by coming up with an idea to develop our theme from.

Often her best thoughts come to her when she's out and about, enjoying long walks in the company of Flora the Dachshund (who you may spot in the collection!).

"I’ve always loved the phrase ‘from tiny acorns mighty oaks grow’ and as I pondered what sort of inspiring theme we could get behind for AW22, I realised that the seed had been sown… (excuse the pun!)."

"Journeys became the common thread as I reflected on how we had all travelled through the past two roller-coaster years. The more I thought about it, the more journeys I became obsessed with – from the metaphorical journeys of life to the literal epic journeys in history.

Overflowing with ideas and excitement we poured everything into this collection and hope you agree that the results are inspiring, informing and beautifully designed!"

Choosing colours

Once the theme idea is fully grown, Jo begins the design process by creating a fresh, new colour palette, which is then showcased throughout the collection.

The meticulously selected colours complement each other and together they offer endless mix and match combinations across our styles.

This season you’ll find wonderful shades of blue and green mixed with warming golden and on-trend coffee. All balanced with pops of playful orchid and cheerful crocus.

Creating our prints

First of all each design is carefully researched. For our ditsy print this season we looked at flowers that were originally discovered in faraway lands but then journeyed back to the UK so we can admire them in gardens here.

We hand draw all of our ideas, and once each element is designed we start building the print. Different layouts, sizes and colourways are then tried out until the final design starts to take shape.

We love this creative process, but the best moment is always seeing the design actually on fabric and made into a garment!

Following on from the prints, we design a huge array of motifs and appliqués. These help offer the wonderful mix and match options that we are known for.

We don't stop until everything is just right and brings our theme to life in the best way possible.

It's hard work, but we hope you agree it's worth it!
