Super girls
For International Women’s Day 2023, we want to introduce you to our super girls.
Three inspirational women feature on our t-shirt, each of whom shaped their incredible careers from childhood memories and experiences.
Read on to find out about each of these amazing women and discover our t-shirt that celebrates them.
Mary Anning
Our first super girl was born in 1799 in Lyme Regis, just along the Dorset coast from Kite HQ. As a young child, Mary and her father wandered along the beach together, exploring and collecting fossils. An otherwise unheard-of activity for a Georgian girl, she was taught how to look for, clean and care for fossils.
Perhaps her biggest find was the first Pterodactyl to be discovered outside of Germany in 1828. She also pioneered the study of coprolites, which is essentially fossilised poo!
The scientific community was often reluctant to recognise and credit her work, but that didn’t stop her. Today, you can see several of her spectacular fossils in the Natural History Museum.
Nina Simone
Born in 1933, Nina was considered a child prodigy when she started to play the piano by ear at the age of three. By the age of six, she was playing the church organ (despite having difficulty reaching the pedals!) and she began formal training supported by benefactors.
In 1954, she started playing in clubs which is where her singing career also began. Her signature style was a unique mix of synthesized jazz, gospel, blues, folk, pop and classical. In the 1960s, Nina became politically active and started singing about social issues including the civil rights movement.
Dubbed ‘The High Priestess of Soul’, her music and social legacies live on.
Lella Lombardi
Our final super girl was born in Italy in 1941 and grew up driving the delivery van for her family’s butcher’s shop. She found a love of cars and saved up to buy her first racing car which she drove in Formula Monza in 1965.
She was the second woman ever (and so far the last) to start a Formula One race. In the 1975 Spanish Grand Prix, she became the first woman to score points in a Championship event and register a top six finish.
Lella continued her career by racing sports cars into the 1980s.
